The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers
Now it's time for part two of our journey to destroy the evil ring. However, does this keep us entertained or should we just skip ahead to the end of the journey? Let's find out.
The film opens with a recap of how Gandalf (Ian McKellen) died at the end of the previous movie. Then, Frodo (Elijah Wood) wakes up along with Sam (Sean Astin) to continue their quest. They come across Gollum (Andy Serkis) who claims that he knows the way to the Black Gate. So the two set off while the others, Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), search out for the other two hobbit boys, Pippin (Billy Boyd) and Merry (Dominic Monaghan), along with working to stop the evil forces of Saruman (Christopher Lee).
Where to begin with this film. I guess a good place to start is with the ring and Frodo. In this movie, we really get a feel for what the ring is doing to Frodo in multiple ways. The ring becomes more like a living creature than just a round sparkly thing. So much so that when we look at the end result of the ring's full power, that being Gollum, we begin to want Frodo to destroy this thing more. Speaking of Gollum, he' a really interesting character. He's tortured and begins talking to himself about everything, but mostly how he can obtain the ring for himself. However, even with his violent nature with stopping at nothing to get the ring, it still is sad to see this guy get beat up in portions of the movie. As for the action sequences, they're amazingly well done, especially the climactic battle at Helms Deep. It's all so well put together and leaves us with a memorable and fun to watch battle.
If I really had to nitpick something, it would be the points in the movie with Pippin and Merry. They're just not interesting like the parts with Frodo and Sam or Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli. However, I can't fault it too much because it does lead to an amazing end fight for the movie.
So should you see The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers? Of course you should, but I'd recommend watching the first movie before going to see it just to remind you of everything that's happened up to this point and who the characters are. While this film isn't necessarily newcomer-friendly, it is a fun time and with the amount of work put into it, it's definitely contender for best film of the year.
