Speed
Pop quiz! What do you do when driving a bus at 50 mph on a crowded highway? Run everything over of course. Enough of that, let's see if Speed should slow down.
In a building, a bomber (Dennis Hopper) sets for an elevator to explode if he doesn't get a lot of money within an hour. However, two of the police officers, Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) and Harry Temple (Jeff Daniels), have a different idea. They set off to diffuse the bomb on the elevator, but can't figure out how. So, instead, the go to the floor right below the elevator to rescue the hostages. After rescuing them, the officers find out where the bomber is hiding and bust in to stop him. The bomber grabs hold of Harry and runs off. Jack tries to shoot the bomber, but he has a bomb strapped to him and he can't let go of the trigger or else it will explode, killing Harry. So Jack shoots Harry, which causes the bomber to let him go. The bomber runs off and the bomb explodes, causing our two heroes to believe that he was killed. Afterwards, Jack and Harry are awarded for their bravery and have a party with the rest of the cops. The next day, a bus blows up near Jack and a phone rings. On the other line is the bomber. He tells Jack of some new rules so that he can get the money he wants. He says that there's another bus nearby that also has a bomb on it. The bomb is activated once the bus reaches 50 mph and will blow if it goes under 50. If Jack tries to get anyone off the bus, the bomber will blow the bus up. He has till 11 o'clock to get the money or else he blows it up. So Jack sets off to save the passengers on the bus, namely Annie (Sandra Bullock), before 11 o'clock.
So, as you can see, the movie starts off right away with a very intense sequence. Watching Jack and Harry try to save these hostages is a lot of fun to witness. The best portions of this moment are the conversations between Jack and Harry. Some are a bit more casual than you would expect, but they're still fun little moments. As for the bus sequence which takes up the rest of the movie, it's really thrilling. Every little moment keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. Bullock and Reeves do wonderful together and really help keep the tension high. The movie also doesn't forget to tell its story and develop interesting and memorable characters while keeping a lot of focus on the action and thrills. Dennis Hopper does great as the bomber. He's always threatening and keeping the feel of a crazy, yet smart, mad man.
However, not everything is perfect here. While Dennis Hopper was amazing as the bomber, I just would of liked to have seen him given more screen time. He's in hardly a third of the movie. Also, some of the individual stunts are a bit outlandish to be believable. There's a moment where they actually jump the bus over a 50 feet gap in a bridge. This just comes off as too incredible and almost takes you out of the moment.
So would I recommend Speed? Most definitely. It's a fantastic thrill ride that keeps the thrills and action high while also telling a unique story and creating moments that viewers will never forget.
