Pulp Fiction
This time around, we have a rather unique movie. What makes it unique is the non-linear way it tells the story. However, does this way make the movie great or does it make it a contender for worst film of the year? Let's find out.
The movie opens up with a couple sitting at a table talking about their life and then how to rob the restaurant they're at. Once the robbery starts, we cut to Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta) on their way to visit some kids. Once they arrive, Jules talks to the kids about what they did to Jules and Vincent's boss. After their coversation, they kill the kids and we cut to Vincent going to his boss' house to take his boss' wife, Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman), out for dinner. All Vincent has to worry about is making sure she's happy and safe, which may prove to be harder than he thinks.
Truthfully speaking, trying to explain the premise for the movie like I just did gives no respect to the writers. It's a hard movie to fully tell the premise without giving too much away. What do I mean? Well there's three different stories that are told throughout the movie, but not necessarily in order, but all meet in one spot at some point. With Vincent, you have him taking Mia out for dinner. Then you have Bruce Willis' character, Butch Coolidge, worrying about how he can protect his wife from some mobsters that are after him. Then you have Jules' story about how he believes he witnessed a miracle and trying to get Vincent into believing him. Even the beginning scene at the dinner feels like a mini story that actually does come into play in the main plot. However, what makes this type of storytelling work is the dialogue. The dialogue in this movie is simply amazing. A truly talented writer was put to work with a vision for this and made it work. Then there's the music which plays a role in key points in the movie while also being quite catchy.
There's not a whole lot wrong with the film. If I had to pick something, it's that this type of storytelling may confuse some people, especially towards the end.
So should you watch Pulp Fiction? Of course. It's an amazing movie that proves just how storytelling can work wonders when put into the right hands. Quentin Tarantino is definitely one person that you should look out for in the future.
