The Lego Movie
So Lego has become so popular with their video games and playsets that they want to make a full fledged movie out of it. Not going to lie, this was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. Let's see if the anticipation was worth it.
The film opens with an old man known as Vitrivius (Morgan Freeman) prepares to take on the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell). He ultimately fails, but warns Lord Business of a man that's so interesting, he'll hold the power to defeat him. Zoom ahead 8 and a half years where we meet Emmet (Chris Pratt), the average citizen of the city. Emmet goes about his day the same as pretty much everyone else. However, after work, he notices someone messing around in the area. This person turns out to be Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks). She takes off into a cave, so Emmet chases after her. He ends up falling down a hole where he finds a mysterious object. Upon touching it, he gets a vision and passes out. When he awakens, he's interrogated by an officer known as Bad Cop and Good Cop (Liam Neeson), depending on what mood he feels like portraying. Bad Cop informs Emmet that he has found the Piece of the Resistance which President Business is trying to find so nothing can stop him from making the world perfect with the power of his Kragle. Eventually, Wyldstyle breaks in to save Emmet and the two set off to prepare a way to take down President Business.
Where can I possibly start with this film's positive points? Well the writing is done terrifically to get the audience laughing and to capture the magical world of Legos. Even when the emotional moments hit, they really feel emotional, which surprised me coming from a kid's film about Legos. Basically everything I wanted from a Lego movie I got, including a lot of cameos by various different Lego products and some self referential humor. The music is great too, if a bit annoyingly catchy. The movie also has a very unique style, not just because everything is made of Legos. You could show me a million movies that have this same plot, but none of them would have the charm of this movie. There's just something about the cartoony ways they tell you time passed or how they tell you they're in a different location that makes this film unique, which is hard to do these days. The twist close to the end of the film was wonderfully pulled off as well.
Really, there's not much I can say wrong with the film other than the basic plot has been done before, so we know what's going to happen. Heck, if you pay attention to the film, you can see exactly when the twist will come and what the twist is way before the movie gets there.
So should you watch the Lego Movie? Definitley. Very few films come out anymore that feel this original or have this much love put into them. Some will see it as a cash grab on how popular the Lego franchise is, but it's still worth seeing several times.
