Apollo 13
It's time to look back on an amazing moment in American history. A moment where we truly knew that we could pull ourselves out of anything. However, does this movie do the event justice? Let's find out.
As the movie begins, we see the past failed attempts of launching into space until a party is shown with Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon), and some other friends and family. They all gather around the television to witness man's first step onto the moon. After the party, Jim and his wife, Marilyn (Kathleen Quinlan) go into their backyard to relax. They talk about the event they just witnessed among other things. The next day, Jim goes into training for his next trip into space on Apollo 13. After some time, Jim is told that one of his crew mates will not be going into space with him. Instead, Jack will. So now Jim, Jack, and the other crew member, Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) will work together to get to the moon and back safely.
As far as the beginning of the movie goes, it's alright. The movie does really get started when they go into space. That's where everything happens. Once the launch is completed, the characters start having fun up until a problem with the ship occurs. Then we really get to see how these characters act under pressure, both the ones in the ship and the ones on land. It's very interesting to see the various ways they deal with their problem. Jack seems to like taking a mathematical route to solve the problem while Jim seems to like going by the books. It's a nice compare-contrast of the two character's personalities, which is where this movie shines.
I don't really have that much for issues with the movie. If I did, they're minor and don't affect it that much. Yeah, the beginning can be slow, but by the time the ship launches, you'll forget about how slow it started.
So should you see Apollo 13? Of course. It's a fantastic film about an amazing moment in American history. It's that perfect mix of knowledge of the event to teach younger audiences about it along with enough entertainment to keep them from sleeping.
