Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Is someone really worth going out and killing seven people that used to date her? Well apparently Scott Pilgrim thinks so. However, should Scott get the girl, or should he be defeated by the weakest of her ex-boyfriends? Let's find out.
The story starts with Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) eating dinner with the other members of his band, the Sex Bob-Ombs. They begin picking on him for his newer, younger girlfriend, Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), until she eventually shows up. She agrees to watch the band play a song. Afterwards, Scott returns home to his gay roommate, Wallace Wells (Kieran Culkin). That night, he dreams of a girl skating past him. When he awakens, he realizes that he's late to meet up with Kives at the library. Once he arrives and the two are about to finish shopping, he sees the girl that he saw in his dream. After a while, he ends up at a party where he finds out that the girl's name is Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). He tries to talk to her, but fails. Some time later, Scott eventually gets the courage up to talk to her, by having her deliver him some mail. The two eventually go out on a date, where they decide to start going out with each other. He invites her to a Battle of the Bands event, which she agrees to attend. Once the Sex Bob-Ombs go on stage, they're interrupted by Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha). The two engage in battle, where Scott eventually comes out on top. Afterwards, Ramona reveals that in order for Scott and her to stay together, he'll have to defeat her seven evil exes.
There's just way too much good stuff to fit in one review, but I'll try my best. The one thing that I really found amazing about the film is the style. It feels like a living, breathing comic book with all the visual effects that go on. From the subtle ones like the words "ding dong" when a doorbell is rung, to the really amazing ones, like a giant creature made of sound. The visual effects team really put their heart and soul into this movie, and it shows with every passing second. Thanks to this, the movie never feels like it gets dull, not even for a second. Every frame has something happening, even if it's supposed to be a really emotional part. What also goes into the moments not feeling dull is the amazing writing. Around when I found out about the movie, I decided to pick up some of the comics that it's based off of. I'm pleased to announce that every hilarious or even remotly funny moment from the comics is captured in this film with spectacular fasion. They even throw in a few flashbacks from the comics whenever Ramona talks about her past. Even the incredibly stupid, yet funny, songs are included, yes even the one that only lasted a second. As for people that didn't read the comics, don't worry. Every joke is funny on its own merits without any prior knowledge of the comic. With all of this combined, the movie begins to look like a real life video game, which isn't bad in this case. That's the style that the comic went in, so it works here. As for the battles against the seven evil exes, they just continued to try and make each one even better than the previous one, which is pleasing to every fiber of a comic and video game fan's body. I could go on and on about what I liked, but we have to continue on.
No matter how much I really don't want to admit it, the movie wasn't perfect. With the movie constantly wanting to out perform the previous battle, it makes one particular battle seem dissappointing. (SPOILER ALERT!!! I'm about to talk about a late battle of the film. If you don't want to have it spoiled, continue to the next paragraph. You have been warned. SPOILER ALERT!!!) During the semi-final battle, they throw out these gigantic monsters that are just amazing. You get this great battle to the death between the two monsters, which leaves you wondering how they could possibly out perform that. Sadly, they don't. The final battle isn't bad, but it just doesn't live up to the hype a lot of people will have after the previous battle. It's got some interesting moments, such as Scott dying and then returning to life with the extra life he got from the previous battle, but that's just not enough. This fight is then followed up by the appearance of Nega Scott, think of him like Dark Link from the Legend of Zelda series. However, the movie trolls you with this fight by never showing even a glimpse of it.
So should you watch Scott Pilgrim vs. The World? I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn't. This movie is one of the best to come out in a long time. It's really unique and is, without a doubt, a contender for one of my favorite films of all time. If you love comics or video games, even if it's only 1% of comics and/or video games, you'll love every moment of the movie.
