Skyfall
To celebrate 50 years of James Bond killing people, getting women, and gambling, we have Skyfall. Let's jump right in and find out if this really is a good way to celebrate this special occasion.
While chasing after their latest target, James Bond (Daniel Craig) and Eve (Naomie Harris) end up chasing a train. Bond gets on the train and begins fighting the target, but he's having a bit of trouble. After some time, Eve gets ready to shoot the target, but informs her boss, M (Judi Dench), that she can't get a clean shot. Regardless, M tells Eve to shoot. When she does, she accidentally hits James. He falls into the ocean below until he's eventually rescued and taken care of. Once he returns to work, he takes his normal tests and is told to go after someone else. While he does, someone begins attacking MI6, starting with their building. So now Bond is sent after whoever is behind these attacks.
Right off the bat, like most James Bond films, the visual effects for the intro are amazing. It really tells the audience everything that needs to be known about James before the movie tells you with words. This intro shows that the movie will play off of the fact that Bond is older and not on his A-game as much as he used to. As for the scenery, it's breath taking. When he goes to find his target, there's a part where he gets on a boat and the boat takes him through this dragon made of light. It's so beautiful. There's also the lovely ladies that Bond always manages to get, one that's here simply to be eye candy and another that actually helps progress the plot at times. As for the villain, he reminds me of the Joker from The Dark Knight. He's spent most of his life trying to take down a specific person and thinks out every possibility from every action. He doesn't care who he hurts to get his goal and refuses to give up until the person he's after does what he tells them. Then there's the music. As most people would agree, there's the incredibly well done James Bond theme. However, that's not the standout piece for me. The opening theme, Skyfall, is wonderfully put together in sequence with the visuals being portrayed. There's also the several pieces throughout the movie that help make the moments get the emotion of the scene across.
There's not a whole lot I have wrong with this movie. My only nitpick is the character of M. She's just not a likable character. The only redeemable thing about her is when she tries to help in the final fight.
So should you watch Skyfall? Of course. If you're a long time fan of the 007 series, there's plenty of throwbacks to the older movies. For newcomers to the series, it's not confusing and you don't need to know much of the previous movies in order to understand this one.
