Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
As Voldermort (Ralph Fiennes) retrieves the Elder Wand from Albus Dumbledor's (Michael Gambon) grave, Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) has become Hogwarts headmaster. After burying Dobby, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) has the goblin Griphook (Warwick Davis) help him, Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) break into Bellatrix Lestrange's (Helena Bonham Carter) vault at Gringotts bank, suspecting a Horcrux may be there. Griphook agrees, in exchange for the Sword of Gryffindor. Harry has wandmaker Ollivander (John Hurt) identify two wands taken from Malfoy Manor. Ollivander says they belonged to Bellatrix and to Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), but Malfoy's has changed its allegiance to Harry. In Bellatrix's vault, Harry discovers the Horcrux is Helga Hufflepuff's cup. He retrieves it, but Griphook snatches the sword and abandons the trio, leaving them cornered by the alerted security. The three release the dragon guardian and flee on its back. Harry sees a vision of Voldemort killing goblins, including Griphook, and learns Voldemort is aware of the theft. Harry also realizes there is a Horcrux at Hogwarts somehow connected to Rowena Ravenclaw. The trio apparate into Hogsmeade, and set off Caterwauling alarms. They are rescued by Aberforth Dumbledore (Ciaran Hinds), who instructs the portrait of his younger sister, Ariana (Hebe Beardsall), to fetch Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis), who leads the trio through a secret passageway into Hogwarts. Now it is up to Harry and the rest of the staff and students at Hogwarts to take down Voldermort.
The battle between Voldermort and all of Hogwarts was just epic. There's magic blasts going everywhere, there's magical creatures killing everyone in sight, and Hogwarts just pretty much gets completely destroyed. It was so satisfying to watch because we have been waiting for 10 years for this battle and it really pays off. Even before the battle begins, the movie does a perfect job of creating the best atmosphere possible mainly due to Alan Rickman's performance. He did an amazing job as Severus just like he always has and really helped shape the mood. What makes this battle even better is that they do not in any way hold back. You will see some of the characters you have grown to love die here. The final match between Harry and Voldermort is so satisfying. Just watching Harry take him on is a blast to watch. The CG for this film was done remarkably well. Everything blended in nicely and didn't really seem like it was a CG effect.
Of course, this movie isn't 100% perfect. The beginning of the movie still has that boring feeling that most of Deathly Hallows Part 1 had. While it was done great, I just wanted to hurry and get to the war. *SPOILER ALERT! IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE OR READ THE BOOK, SKIP ON TO MY OVERALL THOUGHT! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!* While I don't have too many flaws to report with this film, this one can not be ignored. While I did love the final battle between Harry and Voldermort, how Voldermort died is a different story. After Neville kills the snake, which is the last Horcrux, Voldermort just evaporates. It comes off as a cheap and horrible way for him to die. We have spent 10 years of our lives growing to hate and despise this guy with every fiber of our body and we want to see him die in the most brutal way possible for a PG-13 movie and we didn't get that. Then there's the epilogue. I haven't read the book, but my friends who have said that the epilogue was actually really funny and interesting with some interactions between Harry's kid, Albus Severus Potter, and Draco's kid. But here, it's just 5 minutes of Harry and Ginny saying goodbye to their child when he boards the Hogwarts express along with Hermione and Ron saying goodbye to their child. That's really it. Kind of a let down. Then there's the character deaths. Like I said, many characters will die. But the ones that do don't get much respect. Even when one of Ron's brothers dies, the movie kind of just glances over it. I'm not asking for much, but at least have a scene at the end where they all pay respect to those that died for their cause.
So should you see this movie? Are you nuts? Of course you should. Even if you're not up to speed on what's going on, the war will be enough enjoyment for you. Although, if you're really wanting to pay attention and understand the story, I'd recommend watching all of the previous films, or at least just Deathly Hallows Part 1. But no matter who you are, you will enjoy this film. I guarantee it. For those that will complain about lack of character development here, there was. It's the past 7 films.
