The Dark Knight
The bat is back. This time, however, he's going to try an stop a crazy man that lacks any compassion for anybody. So should Batman stop him or should the villain take over Gotham? Let's find out.
The movie opens with a bank robbery. Several people wearing clown masks walk around the bank, cutting wires to alarms and such, before actually entering. Once they enter, they work their way to the safe, killing each person after they finish their assigned job. The manager of the bank grabs his gun and begins shooting at the criminals. Once the criminals disarm him, a bus crashes into the bank for the bags of money to be thrown in. One of these guys shoots the one loading the bags into the truck and walks over to talk to the manager. He takes off his clown mask to reveal that he's the head of this whole operation, the Joker (Heath Ledger). Once the bus leaves, we cut away to a trade off between a couple of criminals. Suddenly, a couple of guys dressed as Batman come in and try to stop them. They're ultimately stopped by Bruce Wayne, aka the real Batman (Christian Bale). Batman stops the impostors and eventually the criminals. Once he arrives back home, he tells his butler, Alfred (Michael Caine), what happened. We then see the district attorney, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), attempting to put a crime boss in prison. He fails, but gets one of the criminals put away. Later, a bunch of the criminals gather in a building to discuss business. Eventually, the Joker enters to make a deal. He says that he can kill Batman for a fee. All he wants is for them to work for him. So now it's up to Batman to stop the Joker before he takes down Gotham.
As usual for me, I'd like to take a look at the characters first, starting with the main villain. The Joker is just frightening as a villain. He's sadistic, crazy, intelligent, and everything that a great villain needs to be. He claims that he's not a planner, yet all of his crimes look like they would take days or weeks of planning. He acts on instinct instead of reason. He doesn't want anything from society. He just wants to cause chaos and watch the world burn. He loves to test the people of Gotham to see just how far they will go before breaking their own morality. He doesn't want to kill Batman simply because Batman is fun. He wants Batman to break his only rule just to prove that chaos can destroy the morality of any man. Also, that make up is really well done. As for our other bad guy, Two-Face. Watching Two-Face slowly go from the sane citizen that he was to the crazy luck-based killer is a lot of fun to witness. It's really well done thanks to some great writing. The writing for the film is flawless. It's not just your basic hero punches bad guy until he wins story. It's more a crime drama mixed with some action here and there. Now don't underestimate the lack of action scenes. The ones that are there are a lot of fun to watch. Batman is basically like a martial arts master and he definitely shows it off here.
However, I do have a few problems with the movie. Two-Face, a villain that a lot of people love, is barely in the movie at all. Once he shows up, he threatens a couple people and kills a few of those couple, then dies. It would of been nice to see more of him, if not keep him going into the next movie. Then there's a flaw with the Joker. He constantly keeps changing his history. At first, he says that his father was very abusive and cut his lips. Then, later, he tells Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhaal), the love interest between Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent, that he cut his lip to always be able to smile around his wife. Lastly, the voice. Yes, the Batman voice that Christian Bale keeps doing for the character. It's just plain annoying and way too silly.
So should you watch The Dark Knight? Certainly. I'm not much of a Batman fan, yet I still loved everything about this movie. It's a fun experience for pretty much anyone. All of the violence is truly done off screen, so those that don't like extremely violent movies don't have to worry.
