Clerks 2
It's not everyday that I get to talk about a comedy with absolutely no plot. That's basically what today's movie is. Does this movie surpass the beloved cult classic? Let's find out.
On his way to work, Dante (Brian O'Halloran) finds that the place is on fire. So he calls the fire department to put it out. His buddy, Randal (Jeff Anderson) comes by and says that he left the coffee maker on again. Zoom ahead about a year where the two are now working at a fast-food restaurant called Mooby's, along with their manager, Becky (Rosario Dawson), and an extreme nerd named Elias (Trevor Fehrman). Dante is also planning on leaving soon with his fiance, Emma (Jennifer Schwalbach). There's also the two drug dealing teens, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith). Together, this group will have all sorts of shenanigans and even attempt to throw Dante an awesome going away party.
For starters, I just want to say that I really enjoy these kind of movies. I don't mean comedies. I just mean films that at least attempt to work without a major goal or objective for the characters. There's no bad guy that's trying to stop them. There's no misunderstanding that eats up most of the movie until the end where everything gets resolved. It's just a film about different people's lives and how putting these characters in a spot that they're not used to can lead to entertaining moments. I just love that, especially for comedies. The comedic moments are just outstanding. This is one of my favorite comedic movies in a long time. No movie has ever made me hurt from laughter like this one. One of my favorite moments in the movie is this random dance sequence that just comes out of nowhere. It's shot just like a musical with characters that are just passing by jumping in to start dancing and it's just hilarious. This is also one of those comedies that isn't really afraid of anything. There's no joke that they'll refuse to tell and it works in the movie's favor...mostly, but I'll get to that later. While this is definitely a comedy, it does have a lot of heartfelt moments, mostly between Dante and Randal, but also between other characters also.
While I did enjoy the movie, there are some things I feel need to be brought up. For starters, this type of comedy isn't for everyone. If I had to compare it to anything, it's all the toilet humor from every episode of South Park combined and then cranked up to a thousand. That does work for people, like myself, but I can imagine many people that would get turned away by that. There's also one joke in particular that most of the movie is spent building up towards that I feel it could do without. I won't spoil anything, but I will say it involves a donkey. I get it. It's supposed to be no-holds-barred comedy, but this just went a bit too far for my tastes.
So is Clerks 2 worth watching? If you can handle this type of comedy, then certainly. This is a hilarious movie that nobody should miss out on. It's funny, clever, and has its heart in the right place for what it wants to say.
