Broken City
It has become well known that people in power can be easily corrupt. However, what if the corrupt person thought he was doing the right thing? That's what we might find out in Broken City.
The story starts off with a police officer, Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg), shooting down a man. He's taken to court on counts of murder, but is found innocent. Zoom ahead 7 years and Billy is fired from the police force and takes pictures to get by. The mayor of the city, Hostetler (Russell Crowe), hires Billy to find out if his wife is cheating on him. If she is cheating on him, then the evidence could be used against him in the election. So now Billy sets out to find the truth.
As with most movies that Wahlberg does, he fights a lot. The action here is pretty good and doesn't overshadow the main plot. As for Russell Crowe, he does a fantastic job playing the mayor of this city. The same goes for the rest of the cast. Sadly, that's about all I can say good about this movie.
Now for the bad, which is most of the movie. Nothing gets tied up by the end of the film. At one point, Billy has a fiance/girlfriend, but she's dropped from the film after one fight. It's never found out if they broke up or if they patched things up. Then there's the first part of the movie with Billy trying to prove that the mayor's wife is cheating on him. By the time this is resolved, which is around the halfway point, it's still not known if she actually was cheating on him. Without spoiling anything, she just says that the guy was something else. (SPOILER ALERT!!! IF YOU DON'T WANT THE REST OF THE MOVIE SPOILED, SKIP TO THE CONCLUSION!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!) The next part of the plot is trying to prove that the mayor isn't telling the truth about what he's doing with a neighborhood he bought. By the end of the movie, the mayor has called Billy down to talk. He blackmails him saying that if Billy goes public with the evidence he found, he'll be thrown in jail via video footage of the shooting 7 years prior. Billy goes against him and has the mayor arrested. It's not given if the mayor does release the video or if Billy gets to walk off scott free. Nothing this movie tries to do is ever finished.
So should you watch Broken City? No. It's a boring movie that tells a terrible tale without trying at all to finish what it started. The action may be decent, but that's all it has going for it.
