Bridesmaids
The movie begins with the main character, Annie Walker (Kristen Wiig) having sex with Ted (Jon Hamm). The next day, we find out that this is just a no-strings-attached relationship. Once Annie leaves, she meets up with her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) and they have coffee together. Lillian explains that her relationship may be coming to an end because of how distant her boyfriend seems to be. Then Annie returns home where we meet her roomates, Brynn (Rebel Wilson) and Gil (Matt Lucas), which are brother and sister who live together. We learn that Annie's life is completely horrible and she wants to make it better. After a while, Lillian wants Annie to come over. Once Annie arrives, Lillian gives her the big news that her boyfriend has proposed to her. They get excited and teary-eyed and tell everyone and Lillian wants Annie to be her Maid of Honor. She accepts. After some more time, the engagement party comes in which we meet the Bridesmaids. Lillian's fiance's boss Helen Harris III (Rose Byrne), her cynical cousin Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey), her idealistic friend Becca (Ellie Kemper), and her raunchy future sister-in-law Megan (Melissa McCarthy). After the party, Lillian along with Annie and all the other Bridesmaids begin to plan everything for the wedding, not counting everything that could, and will, go wrong.
This movie is absolutely hilarious. It's completely obvious that the producer that made Superbad did this film because that type of humor is used here. From the very second it starts, it makes you laugh. The beginning sex scene is just so over-the-top, in a good way, and crazy that it puts a smile on your face. From that moment, you know that you're in for one wild ride. The one character that really steals the show in terms of humor is Megan. Everything she does is downright hilarious and makes this chick flick a movie that even guys can enjoy. Not to say the other characters don't become funny as well. Annie gets extremely hilarious when she's in the right moment. What's even better is that, unlike some other comedies, the jokes don't get in the way of the overall film. The jokes are blended in with the story so well that it makes everything believable. Enough about how funny this movie is. Let's get to what most chick flicks want to convey. The emotion. This movie does a great job at making you feel what Annie's going through seeing as being the Maid of Honor is such a stressful job. I'm a guy and even I felt that I could relate to Annie. Whenever she was happy, I was happy. When she was upset because something went horribly wrong, I got upset.
Of course, not every movie can be perfect. There's several times where the movie remembers that it's a chick flick and thus becomes boring and slow for the male audience members. One very obvious scene is during the engagement party when both Annie and Helen keep saying more and more happy things about the bride and groom. The scene just seems to drag on forever and doesn't seem to end. Speaking of that, most of the beginning of the film is slow. It just seems to drag on without much humor or anything to get the viewer interested. It picks up about 30 minutes in, but that's a long time for just sitting there with the occasional hilarious joke. Then there's the story. My problem with this movie's story is the same with most comedies. It's predictable. We know who Kristen Wiig will fall in love with. We know that there's going to be issues with her relationship with him. And we know what will go wrong. But it's not a huge problem seeing as how this movie deals with its predictability by making us think of how are they going to do it, since we know it will happen, we just don't know how.
So should you see this movie? Of course. Don't let it's chick flick appearance make you think that it's going to be all sunshine and happiness and lovey-dovey like most of them are. While it is a love story, most of the love is kept down low and not really in the way so that men can enjoy it also.
