Men in Black 3
After 10 years of waiting, we finally have our third installment in the Men in Black franchise. Is this another amazing installment or will you walk out wishing that they wiped your mind? Let's find out.
On a secret prison on the Moon, a girl comes in with a cake wanting to see Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement). They take her to his cell where he unleashes his aliens to kill the guards and free him. He then kills the girl and goes to Earth. We then see Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) wiping some people's minds over an item they found. Afterwards, they are informed of a resturant where people are getting intestinal parisites of alien origin. They go to inspect it and learn that Boris is free. This frightens K for some unknown reason that he doesn't want anyone to know. K and J are attacked by all the aliens in the resturant, including an alien earth fish. The owner is killed by Boris in the process and K eventually finds him on the roof of the resturant. J helps by using a steel door to block Borris' needles. J goes back to HQ where he tries to learn about the connection between Boris and K. He stumbles upon some information that he's denied from reading. That night, J calls K to try and find out, but K still refuses to tell him. The next day, J discovers that K has been wiped from existance. The only person that knows him is J. So he goes to an alien at a shop that he found out sold Boris a time traveling device. He takes it and goes on top of the Empire State Building since he has to jump from a really high area for it to work. He jumps and lands back in 1969 on the day before the incident between Boris and K happens. J eventually runs into the younger K (Josh Brolin). K tries to figure out what J knows, but J won't tell him. After K threatens to wipe J's mind, J tells him everything. So now it's up to our two agents to stop Boris before he destroys the planet by killing K.
This is probably one of the few times where comparing a sequel to the original movie makes the sequel look better. For starters, the main villain is a lot better in this than in the first movie. In the first movie, he was mainly just crazy and he had a lot of build up for one let down of an alien. He just turned out to be a giant cockroach. Here, Boris is actually threatening. He doesn't just run around kidnapping people and acting insane. He actually has a plan of action and follows through with it. When K disappears from existance, it's proof that Boris was successful in his plans, which is why J had to go back. Although, the villain isn't really the main focus here, which really makes the first movie's villain look bad in comparison. Instead, the main focus is on J and K trying to get to know each other more. Since older K isn't open with anything, young K is open with anything. So it's the perfect time to learn a lot more about K as a character since he's willing to tell both J and the audience more about his life. Speaking of young K, Josh Brolin is amazing here. It's nearly impossible to tell the difference between him and Tommy Lee Jones. He does the voice perfect and does act like a younger version of K. There's also this other character known as Griffin (Michael Stuhlbarg) who, when first introduced, I thought was going to be this annoying character. Griffin is an alien that can see every outcome to every second of every situation. However, he's actually a pretty interesting character. In fact, I found him to be as enjoyable to see as Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and Josh Brolin. Another character that I really enjoyed seeing take up the majority of the movie was J. This movie is all about him and he's amazing. This movie just shows that Will Smith can be serious when he needs to be and hilarious when he gets the time to tell a joke. He's way better here than he was in the first movie. Finally, there's the ending. Without spoiling anything, it's a real tear jerker. It shows a special connection between J and K that J never knew about. Little hints throughout the movie built up to this ending and it was an amazing pay off.
Alright, now here's the things that you may wish was wiped from your mind. The only problem that I really had with this movie was a minor nitpick. It's what I believe the first movie did right that wasn't here. A wide diversity of aliens. We're 10 years ahead in technology from the first movie and we still can't create aliens that take our breath away. The first movie had tons of diversity amoung aliens. Even if it had to take breaks from the main plot to show them off, it at least still showed them off. Here, there's very few different forms of aliens and the ones that we haven't seen before aren't really that appealing.
So would I recommend this movie? Of course. If you're a fan of the Men in Black franchise, you'll enjoy every moment of this movie. If you haven't seen a single movie in the series in your life, you're seriously missing out. I'd still say check this movie out and then rent the first movie just so you can learn more about the Men in Black. You won't regret it.
