Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter
So after recently watching the mockbuster of this film and realizing that Twilight is ending this year, I figure that it's time to get into a real vampire movie. However, can Honest Abe kick zombie ass or should he just stick to freeing the slaves? Let's find out.
Abraham Lincoln is a boy that helps chop some wood, or something like that. Suddenly, he finds his black friend being whipped. This friend is Will Johnson. Abe tries to help stop the man from whipping Will, but ends up getting whipped too. Abe's mother stops the man and takes him home. That night, she is attacked and dies the next day while Abe reads to her. Years pass and we meet a much older Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker). He goes into the local bar where he runs into Henry Sturges (Dominic Cooper), which causes Abe to drop his gun, but he quickly picks it up. Later that night, he finds the man that killed his mother all those years ago, Jack Barts (Marton Csokas). He tries to kill him, but discovers that Jack is not human, but instead some kind of creature. Henry rescues Abe, who has been knocked unconscious. The next day, he awakens in Henry's house. He tells Abe that Jack Barts is a vampire and teaches him how to kill these creatures. So now, Abe sets out on a journey to kill every vampire in his way, including both Jack and the vampire leader.
As most people would imagine with a title like this, it's an incredibly silly movie. Anything that you could think that could happen in this movie most likely does happen. From unbelievable stunts to completely bending logic over the table and fucking the shit out of it. Each fight scene is amazing and shows off some unbelievable stunt that will leave you laughing afterwards just at how ridiculous it is. However, it's not just silly. It also has some pretty serious moments. Some come out of nowhere, but then there's the ones that actually make sense. For the ones that make sense, they really work well and blend incredibly well with the movie. As for the acting, Benjamin Walker does amazing as Lincoln. His performance is perfect for a movie as silly as this.
Sadly, this movie has quite a few flaws. While Benjamin Walker's acting is amazing, he doesn't quite have the feel of Lincoln. He comes off as just someone named Abraham Lincoln instead of our 16th President. It's not until he actually becomes president that he seems like Lincoln. Then there's the ridiculous action scenes. While some are fun to watch, others, such as a horse jumping scene and a train fight scene, are clearly green screened and just too much to take in. During these action scenes, it seems like they love to use the slow motion effect a lot. It's like they effects guy fell asleep while the movie was still playing and kept accidentally hitting the slow motion button. It's fine for some uses, but not for over half the movie. These work well on the big screen, but when it eventually gets released on DVD, it won't have that same effect.
So would I recommend seeing this movie? Sure, but only for matinee price. It's a fun movie with friends, but it's not one that will be remembered for years to come. So if you just want a fun movie with silly as all Hell action scenes, go see it. If you're wanting an Oscar worthy movie that really delves deep into the life of our 16th President, just wait for Lincoln later this year and don't see this.
